Stringer’s Cottage is a private, romantic getaway in a gorgeous bush setting in the gold mining town of Walhalla. While staying at Stringer's Cottage you will experience the serenity of a real bush environment. It is very peaceful and private with the only sounds the birds and the rushing water of Stringer's Creek below. The scenic Walhalla Tourist Train runs for part of the year on Wednesdays and weekends, and there are also gold mine tours. There are walking ghost tours on the weekends. You are 10 minutes walking distance from the pub and about another 5 minutes to the rest of the town.

In Winter you will have easy access to Mt St Gwinear; 30 minutes away with tobogganing and cross-country skiing and Mt Baw Baw 50 minutes drive for skiing. There is a cosy wood fire to keep away the winter chill.

In Summer, Stringer’s Cottage is a great escape from the heat, in the shady Stringer’s Gully. Leave the screen door closed and enjoy the valley breezes, the smell of eucalyptus and the sound of the creek below. The large bedroom features two comfy armchairs and a selection of books and magazines to while away the time.

Additional Information

Stringer’s Cottage features a queen size bed with a luxuriously warm doona with all linen and towels provided. The bedroom has windows opening on to a bushland setting, and a fireplace which adds to the romantic ambience. Firewood is provided and the wood burning fire will burn efficiently day and night to keep the cottage cosy in Winter. Bedside lamps add ambience and there is a selection of books to browse through. There are two comfy armchairs by the fire in the bed-sitting room.

The galley kitchen has fridge, stove, oven and plenty of crockery and cutlery, and there is a small supply of complimentary tea, coffee and milk provided for your arrival. The kitchen counter overlooks Stringer’s Creek and there are barstools so you can sit on and enjoy the view while you dine.

The compact bathroom features a shower with instantaneous gas hot water, and a separate indoor toilet and hand basin. The cottage is light and bright with its own porch and outdoor dining space under cover. It's cosy in Winter and cool in Summer. A wooden staircase (40 steps) leads up to the road where you are just a short walk to the village. Parking is next to the Coach House wood shed, and is all on the one level for unloading when you first arrive. If no-one is in the Coach House feel free to use the driveway to walk in and out if that is easier. If you wish to keep your car in the driveway, we ask that you please park at the end, next to the shed. You can also park on the road, to the right of the gas bottles.

Everything is walking distance, and the cottage sits above the tourist railway line.

You do not require a 4WD though there are lots of local tracks to explore if you do have one.

The address of Stringer’s Cottage is 20 Happy Go Lucky Rd, Walhalla. There are two buildings on the property with the other being The Coach House. Please note: other guests may be staying in The Coach House while you holiday at Stringer's Cottage.

GETTING TO WALHALLA GUESTHOUSES
Please drive safely when going in or out of Walhalla. The roads are quite windy in mountainous terrain, and it is important that you err on the side of caution.

CHECKING IN
To check into Stringer's Cottage, please text either Karen (0425 713 683) or Steven (0402 729 150) 1 or 2 days before your stay. You will be given a unique code that will access the key safe to the left of the front door of Stringer's Cottage.

PARKING
Parking for Stringer’s Cottage is on Happy Go Lucky Rd to the right of the gas bottles. There is a gate to the right of the bottles (roughly 10 metres) which opens onto steps (approximately 40) that lead down to the cottage. Please note: you may wish to park on ground level instead of using the stairs. If this is the case, you are welcome to use the driveway to the left of the property. Please park next to the shed as the driveway will also be used by guests staying in the Coach House.

UPON ARRIVAL
Please remove your shoes when entering the property. It is recommended that you bring slippers when staying at Stringer's Cottage in Winter.

POWER SUPPLY
As of 2023, Stringer's Cottage is connected to mains electricity.

WATER SUPPLY
The property uses tank water. We therefore ask that you conserve your water usage as much as possible.

HEATING AND COOLING
There is a split system heating and cooling unit in Stringer's Cottage. In Winter it can get very cold, so we recommend that you start the heating system upon arrival.

You can also use the fireplace. Outside the front door, there is a large box that contains firewood. If you require additional wood when using the fireplace, the second key on the key chain opens this box. Please lock this box once you are leaving.

There are blankets provided as well as hot water bottles.

GROCERIES AND SUPPLIES
You will be provided with some milk, coffee, tea, sugar, as well as basic condiments such as salt, pepper and oil. For grocery/food shopping, we recommend purchasing anything you may need in Moe or Traralgon as there are limited supplies in the township.

There are no grocery shops in Walhalla, although you can get some limited supplies from the Corner Store and from nearby Rawson.

EATING OUT
The Walhalla Witchery Cafe does terrific coffee and lunch (try their delicious scones!) and is open 10:00am until 4:00pm most days.

The Goldfields Train Station close to Stringer’s Cottage is open some days for a few hours: here they serve coffee, tea and excellent lunch fare. It is only open on weekends, most public and school holidays, but is not open all day.

The Walhalla Pub (The Wally Pub) does excellent parmigiana and steak dishes among other things. Please note it is only open Wednesday to Sunday at the following times:

Weekdays - Lunch: 12.00pm - 2.00pm (excluding Monday & Tuesday)
Dinner: 6.00pm - 7.30pm
Weekends - Lunch: 12.00pm - 2.30pm
Dinner: 6.00pm - 8.00pm

On the weekends especially, the Wally Pub can be in high demand. In all cases, it is best to ring ahead and book so that you can be assured of getting a table. The number for the Wally Pub is 0460 516 228.

For a luxurious, home-style Italian meal, Assagio del Forno is an excellent choice that we highly recommend. Assagio del Forno is only open on Sundays from 11.00am-7.00pm, and to book a table, you will need to email: [email protected]. Assagio del Forno is a 20-minute drive from Walhalla Guesthouses, in Coopers Creek. Aside from amazing pizza, AdF also make incredible bagels. If you can't fit them in at lunch, order some to take away: you won't regret it.

PHONE COVERAGE
Walhalla has reliable Telstra mobile coverage, Optus coverage, and as of recently, some Vodafone coverage. Other providers may have coverage in Erica and Rawson nearby.

Please note: there is presently no WiFi at Stringer’s Cottage.
