Ballarat and Bendigo are worth their weight in gold (literally – they’re old gold mining towns from the 1850s) but an escape to central Victoria is never complete without a sticky beak around its picturesque towns, such as Kyneton, Maryborough and Maldon. A trendy region, with a growing food and wine scene, you can get everything from a country pie to a six-course degustation dinner here. If it’s art you’re after, the Castlemaine Art Museum features an historic collection while the Goldfield Track is 210km of wild mountain biking if you want to get your stoke (and spoke) on.
