Timbarra Hideaway is a Strawbale Cottage bush retreat for people who love waking up to the sound of birds and a trickling river. Situated in the East Gippsland Mountains on the bank of the Timbarra River this comfortable, technology free, self contained house is perfect for your escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This unique house was built by owners Jeff and Joy from scratch. Neither had built a house before and ventured into the challenge of an alternative creation using strawbales. The house features thick hand rendered walls, poles cut from the neighbouring farm, poured earth floor, recycled corrugated iron feature walls, slow combustion cooking, wood fire and modern composting toilet. It has texture, warmth and some gorgeous quirky surprises for guests to find. The water is heated by the cooking stove and the house is powered by solar power. The kitchen is fully equipped, choice of gas or wood fired BBQ with outdoor chairs and tables provided.

Only 40 metres from the river the house is surrounded by farmland with cows and sheep often wandering by. Dogs are not welcome for this reason - no matter how well behaved. Motor bikes and guns are not allowed either.

Joy had a career as a community health nurse and Jeff has worked in several jobs inlcluding as an electrician. Both are practical people who like to 'think outside the square' enjoying the challenge of finding a solution to problems. Both love recycling stuff. Timbarra was Joy's childhood home while Jeff was a city boy. Both love living in East Gippsland and spent many happy days camping at Timbarra before biting the bullet and building this lovely Straw Bale house. It was an adventure as they explored how to build in straw and then got busy and at times very, very dirty making their dream a reality. After camping in a shed and old caravan for several years on weekends, longer periods for Jeff, it was super exciting to finally be able to say 'We are finished"!
