The Special House - wabi sabi sanctuary in Ettalong Beach

Humble is the new luxury. A charming, artist designed home in Ettalong Beach. The Special House has a unique, wabi sabi design approach and features a king bed and thoughtfully curated vintage and hand made pieces throughout the home. It's a generous, relaxing space of calm and serenity. Facing north and receiving light all day, this intimate retreat is a short stroll from the waterfront, cafes, restaurants and shops. Just 75 minutes from Sydney CBD, it's perfect for a weekend getaway or holiday.

About the space
Built in the 1940s, The Special House is a charming original fisherman’s cottage updated with modern comforts and a unique design. It is a very private home being surrounded on all sides by 1.8m high fences.

The space has a fully equipped kitchen, reverse cycle air conditioning (for both cooling and heating), an outdoor shower and bath (both hot and cold) as well as a purpose built brick BBQ for cooking over fire.

The place features artfully curated materials and vintage furniture, sourced with sustainability in mind.

The lounge room has a huge, linen-covered, ultra comfortable couch for you to laze or take a nap on. The daybed can comfortably sleep a third child.

The kitchen has been hand built, featuring the Japanese shou sugi ban technique. It’s a foodie’s kitchen with a 90cm Falcon oven and a delight to cook in. Guests can pick from the abundant herb garden to use in cooking - parsley, thyme, oregano, basil (Italian and Thai), wild rocket, coriander, sorrel, baby spinach, rosemary, chives, tarragon and more.

The master bedroom has a king sized bed with a premium Ecosa mattress and luxurious French flax linen bedding. The windows look out to the private garden which features two huge gum trees providing beautifully dappled morning light.

The sunroom features two daybeds that catch the afternoon warmth. For family bookings the two daybeds are prepared as beds with full linens to comfortably sleep two children.

The home has Bluetooth speakers and a record player, as well as a projector for watching movies.

The house has a north facing, covered patio with outdoor dining and two deck chairs. It’s perfect for alfresco living, dining and relaxing day and night. The private garden has plenty of light, shade and privacy.

There is also a brick BBQ with various cooking options. We provide wood for cooking over fire or in the small pizza oven. For easy outdoor cooking, there is a dual butane cooker that gets going at the flick of a switch.

This is our quaint coastal holiday home which we continually work on and improve, and we’re happy to share it with you.
