In just an hour from Melbourne, you’ll find yourself at The Last Shack.
It’s in Somers, on the Mornington Peninsula, but not that side of the Peninsula - the other side. The side with farms, wineries and forests. The side with birdlife, dolphins, empty beaches and, did I mention wineries?
Pull into the last shack (opposite the Lord Somers Camp) and you pull into a different time. It’s retro, 60’s chic, shacky but not shabby. Not visible from the street, it’s all windows and wide decks, surrounded by coastal Banksias and towering gums.
Crunch down the path, over the decking where you’ll spend most of the day, and into a house that’s been the abode of many artists. It shows. The light, the art, the creative use of spaces and the thoughtful décor is a tribute to the creative minds that have lived here.

Do you cook? The brand new kitchen is fully kitted out if you do.
And afterwards, take a walk. Just down the road is the famous Somers beach. Safe, uncrowded and you might even get to swim with the dolphins.
Wade across the Merricks Creek and you’ll find yourself on Coolart beach - long, pristine and for the most part – deserted.
And when you head back to the last shack, cut through Coolart National Park. Keep your eyes out for wallabies, koalas, echidnas and sugar gliders.
Hungry again? You might like to stroll to the Somers General Store - great coffee, great food and terrific staff. Or, perhaps you fancy a little wine tasting? Some of the country’s best wineries and restaurants are a short drive away. Including Port Leo Estate, Foxy’s Hangout and Jackalope.
Now that you’ve worn yourself out, it’s time to light the fire and settle back into a couch that is soft and crazy big. Or a beanbag that’s even bigger.
