Karekare cabin in the heart of west coast
Adventure in Auckland, NZ
We arrived at West of the Moon just after watching an amazing sunset at a nearby beach called Piha. When arriving at the cabin, we were greeted by our super friendly host and his orange friendly cat. The cabin was a cool loft style set up - which is what you want when staying near the beach.
In the morning, we decided to go and check out the nearby waterfall called Karekare falls. We jumped in for a winter dip, which felt like an ice bath but super refreshing. Then we headed back to the cabin to relax in the sun on the deck and make some lunch on the bbq. West of the Moon is situated next to a beautiful forest, so we enjoyed an abundance of wild life from the deck.
In the afternoon, we headed off on our adventure to these caves on the beach just down from the Mercer Bay loop. The walk down is difficult but exciting, as parts of the walk you have to use ropes to get down. Once down, we walked across the stunning black sandy beach and checked out the cave. We then headed back up the mountain, whilst taking in breathtaking sunset on trek back up.
After our hike we headed back to the cabin, had some dinner, put on some Netflix and chilled out after a day full of adventure. In the morning, after some eggs for brekky we said farewell to our cabin stay in the heart of the west coast.
