Golden Days in Allambee

Sometimes, the best kind of getaway is the one that pulls you completely off the grid—and our stay in a tiny house in Allambee did exactly that. Just a couple of hours from Melbourne, we found ourselves immersed in stillness, crisp air, and a landscape of rolling hills and towering trees.

Though entirely off-grid, the tiny house was impressively well-equipped. Heated blankets, a full kitchen, fresh linens, and even a composting toilet (which, to our surprise, was completely fine—and odour-free!) made our stay comfortable and cosy. We spent our days exploring the property, cooking over an open fire, playing games, and simply soaking in the quiet.

While the house alone offered a perfect retreat, we also took the chance to explore nearby towns like Loch and Leongatha, before heading down to Wilsons Promontory. Just an hour from the property, it’s a place we’ve visited before—but one we’re always happy to return to. We hiked to a lookout for lunch and were lucky enough to spot emus and wallabies along the way. Afterwards, we wrapped up the day with drinks at Gurney’s Cider and Fleet Wines—both well worth a visit.

This stay was a reminder of how easy it is to feel a world away, without going far. Whether you’re after crisp autumn hikes, a moment of stillness, or a great glass of wine, Gippsland truly delivers something for everyone.

This scenic lookout hike at Wilsons Prom is the perfect mix of effort and reward. We enjoyed the walk in cool autumn weather, stopping at the top to take in sweeping views and enjoy our packed lunch. Along the way, we spotted wallabies and even a couple of emus, making it a memorable part of our trip. The Prom offers plenty of well-marked trails, so there's something for everyone—whether you're up for a short walk or a longer day hike.

Fleet Wines is a hidden gem in South Gippsland with a relaxed vibe and beautifully crafted wines. We visited in autumn and loved the welcoming atmosphere—the friendly team made the tasting experience feel personal and warm. The setting is laid-back yet stylish, perfect for a slow afternoon enjoying a glass (or two) and chatting about the wines. A great stop if you're exploring the area.

Gurney’s Cidery is the perfect post-hike stop after a day at Wilson's Prom. The gardens are stunning, with panoramic views over the water that make you want to linger long past closing time (we definitely did!). The cider tasting was a highlight, especially the warm spiced mulled cider, which hit the spot on a cool autumn afternoon. Between the friendly vibe, beautiful setting, and delicious drinks, we’d go back in a heartbeat.

We stopped by Ripplebrook Winery on our way to Possums Retreat and were so glad we did. It’s a peaceful spot surrounded by countryside views and makes for a lovely detour if you're in the area. A great place to stretch your legs, sip some local wine, and enjoy a moment of stillness before checking in.

One of the highlights of our stay was cooking over the open fire just outside the tiny house. We made both dinner and breakfast this way, and there’s something so grounding about starting or ending your day by the fire. Whether you're brewing your morning coffee or winding down with something simple under the stars, it’s a beautiful way to slow down and connect with the moment.

After a day of exploring, we wound down with a cosy game night at the tiny house. We brought a few of our favourite games to completely unplug and also made use of the ones at the house—playing cards, starting a puzzle, and a few rounds of dominoes. It was the perfect way to slow down, switch off from screens, and enjoy some simple fun.

On our way through South Gippsland, we stopped in the charming town of Loch—a single main street lined with character. It’s full of beautifully styled boutiques, quirky op shops, and thoughtfully decorated cafes and restaurants. We spent the morning wandering in and out of stores, grabbing a coffee, exploring the suspension bridge, and soaking in the relaxed, welcoming vibe. A perfect stop if you love a slow stroll with plenty of personality.
