Heart of the Hills
Adventure in Federal, North Coast, NSW, AU
Whisk away to the hinterland in the hills beyond Byron offer wilderness, tranquillity and rich farming history. Heartwood is set on the Wilson River banks on a 100-acre cattle farm and is consciously designed for recuperation and reconnection to nature. Lovingly built using reclaimed materials and styled with attention to even the smallest details, the cottage holds a hundred stories. From the moment you step onto the vast property, it feels like home, not just in itself, but also in its surroundings. Perfectly positioned on its own ridge, the retreat’s eastern aspect lets the sun radiate through the living areas in the mornings, but there’s also a rear porch to enjoy the sunset over the hills. You feel like you’re a million miles away, but everything is within reach.
The front porch makes time at home far more enjoyable with its ever-changing outlook - whether soaking in the heated plunge pool, cooking up a feast on the barbecue and eating lunch outdoors (or perhaps a picnic by the river), or reading a book in the armchair in the sunshine. If the weather isn’t on your side, run a bath and sink deep into serenity or let food warm your soul and get cooking - it’s important to stress it boasts the kitchen of dreams - quality appliances, conscious design and fine tea/coffee. The cottage has everything you need to kick back, explore, enjoy time with friends and feel far removed from the hustle and bustle.
While we relaxed in the comfort of the facilities at home or played bocce on the lawn, we sure made the most of the days with activities outdoors. There’s so much on offer, but I’ve included a few favourites below. Take a tip from me, stop into Federal Doma for some quality modern Japanese in a small-town setting, especially if cooking at home isn’t your thing!

Things We Did
- River
- Café
Sit on the river banks and take in the sounds of nature while you sip a cold beverage and nibble on local produce.

Owned and operated by two chefs, Takayuki Kuramoto and Takashi Yaguchi, it represents much of what is fascinating about Australia's current food scene: the spread of vibrant and creative cooking to rural areas.
